iPhone fever hits UK

November 8th, 2007

The iPhone will go on sale in the UK tomorrow, and iPhone fever has already taken over the web.

Popular auction site eBay has seen fit to clarify its rules to sellers who are looking to make a quick buck on the device, which is already being advertised for sale on eBay.co.uk.

“Due to the high demand and limited supply of the Apple iPhone, eBay is taking strong measures to protect both buyers and sellers within our community,” eBay said in a statement.

It went on to say that one- and three-day listings are not allowed, that PayPal must be offered as a payment method, and that new sellers cannot list using the ‘Buy It Now’ option.

The Carphone Warehouse announced its quarterly results this morning and chief executive Charles Dunstone hailed the effect the iPhone was anticipated to have on the company’s future profits.

“We are delighted to be the only independent distributor selected by Apple to launch the iPhone. It goes on sale from 6pm tomorrow and has already attracted widespread customer interest,” said Dunstone.

Apple also promised to help customers buying an iPhone to get to grips with the device with in-store workshops.

Ron Johnson, Apple’s senior vice president of retail, said: “Every Apple retail store will offer support for iPhone at the legendary Genius Bar, and beginning Saturday morning you can learn how to get the most out of your new iPhone by attending a free workshop or scheduling a personal training session through our popular One-to-One program.”

BT Vision Self Install

November 8th, 2007

BT Vision is now available to customers who wish to install the service in their homes themselves, BT announced today.

You can save yourself a £60 call-out charge for an engineer if you’re prepared to install BT Vision in your home yourself, incurring just a £30 connection fee.

However, you need to be a BT Total Broadband customer to get the service. There are a variety of content packages you can sign up to, from pay monthly deals and on-demand films, TV programmes or sporting events.

The equipment is delivered directly to your home and includes powerline adapters that plug into the mains electricity and carry the video signal from the BT Home Hub to the set-top box via the domestic power circuit.

Dan Marks, BT Vision chief executive said: “For customers who don’t want or need an engineer visit, Self Install makes BT Vision an even more attractive choice – it gives all the benefits of our next-generation digital TV service for an incredible up front price of just £30.”

The service, which offers a range of TV programming, video-on-demand as well as live sport including Premier League football, is already in 70,000 homes in the UK, according to BT.

There were a number of delays after the plans were announced, the service finally went live last December.

FIA begins probe of McLaren 2008 car

November 8th, 2007

The FIA began its investigation into the McLaren 2008 car this week, in line with the World Motor Sport Council’s decision in the spying affair.

The governing body excluded McLaren from the 2007 Constructors’ Championship after confidential Ferrari information was leaked to McLaren’s then chief designer Mike Coughlan.

McLaren had since suspended Coughlan, but the WMSC said in its September verdict that it would make a decision on whether or not to further penalise McLaren for the 2008 season after an examination of the 2008 cars take place.

Investigators on behalf of the governing body visited the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking in the last couple of days, where they reportedly held a thorough examination on the premises and took with them data for further analysis.

Asked about the investigation, a McLaren spokesperson told autosport.com: “We are unable to make any comment other than to say that an inspection has always been part of the WMSC decision, and of course we are cooperating fully with the FIA.”

According to sources, the FIA has forbidden McLaren to reveal details of the probe. The governing body also said it would not comment due to the fact that it is part of an ongoing investigation.

FIA president Max Mosley last week revealed the governing body will likely use third-party experts to review the data collected on the McLaren 2008 car.

“The investigation will be thorough,” he told the BBC, “it will use outside experts and we will do everything we possibly can to make sure that either of the McLarens has no element of Ferrari intellectual property in it.

“If it does, we will then have to consider taking some sort of action.”

Mosley said, however, that McLaren would not necessarily be excluded again from the championship.

“That would not necessarily be preventing them from running,” he said. “It would be more likely that they would be given a negative point allocation.”

United destroy Dynamo

November 8th, 2007

Manchester United qualified for the Champions League knockout stage after a comfortable win against Dynamo Kiev.

Gerard Pique headed his first United goal after 31 minutes and Carlos Tevez quickly added a second after a brilliant exchange with Wayne Rooney.

United continued to dominate and Rooney side-footed home Nani’s superb cross with 15 minutes left.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s solo effort made it four late on and Roma’s draw with Sporting Lisbon sent United through.

United made five changes to the team that drew 2-2 at Arsenal, and it took a while for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to get into their stride.

Rooney received a yellow card after 17 minutes for a foolish chase and tackle on Artem Milevskiy.

But United’s frustrations eased on the half-hour when they took the lead in freakish circumstances.

Michael Carrick’s header from Ronaldo’s free-kick bounced off the head of an unwitting - and offside - Tevez and lobbed into the path of Pique, who headed home.

And five minutes later they doubled their advantage when Rooney exchanged passes with Tevez to allow the gifted Argentine to shoot high past Olexandr Shovkovskiy.

United made a substitution at half time, with Tomas Kuszczak replacing Edwin van der Sar in goal after the Dutch keeper suffered a foot injury.

He was instantly in action, diving to save well from Diogo Rincon - but United were always in the ascendancy.

Nani had a shot saved from 20 yards and then Shovkovskiy made a fine double save from Tevez and Danny Simpson after brilliant approach work from Patrice Evra.

Kuszczak had distinguished himself, and he saved well from Tiberiu Ghioane as Dynamo at last showed more attacking intent.

United wrapped up the win with 15 minutes left when Nani provided a superb right-wing cross that was an open invitation for Rooney to side-foot home from six yards.

Ronaldo finished the night with a flourish, tricking his way into the area in trademark fashion before firing home powerfully.

1 in 5 it bosses are blocking facebook

November 8th, 2007

One in five businesses blocks social networking websites to prevent staff time-wasting and security threats, security firm McAfee has found.

However, according to McAfee, this is a surprisingly low number as IT managers should be well aware of the security dangers posed by the use of sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

The reason many companies don’t block them could well be because managers see other threats as being more prominent, as well as a reluctance to risk a drop in staff morale.

“IT decision makers often have the difficult job of making a choice between what they know are serious security threats and other business priorities such as productivity and employee morale,” said Toralv Dirro of McAfee.

A report from McAfee found that 57 per cent of IT managers were concerned that social networking sites could open a network up to viruses and 54 per cent thought they encouraged spam email.

The research also found that IT managers were concerned about threats from other areas, such as music downloads, instant messaging and online dating.
